The New Worship Resources Project

Augsburg Lutheran Churches is developing new worship resources and reviewing existing worship resources as it continues work on a "New Worship Resources" CD-rom.

Dr. Dennis and Darla Bielfeldt wrote a jazz setting for Rite 2 of the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary for our 2004 gathering in Brookings.  The Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary (ELH) is a successor to the (former) ELC Lutheran Hymnary.  Many of our members are interested in new musical settings that use words which are faithful to our Lutheran heritage.

If you’d like to be part of our “New Worship Resources Project” please contact Mrs. Dorothy McNaught.

Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary (ELH)

"The ELH represents a marriage of two American Lutheran traditions of worship. It bears the imprint of the Lutheran Hymnary of 1913, a work produced for use by the various Norwegian groups in the country at that time, and The Lutheran Hymnal of 1941, prepared by a committee from the Synodical Conference, with the influential leadership of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod."

More background information, including complete text of indexes can be found at http://www.blc.edu/comm/gargy/gargy1/ELH.html.

Where to find the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary (ELH):

The ELH is available for $15.00. An accompaniment edition is also available for $15.00.

Reviews:

I was introduced to the Evangelical Lutheran Hymnary by Dr. Oliver K. Olson, and join him in highly recommending it to anyone who is interested in Lutheran worship and liturgy. Like its predecessor, it has the three ecumenical creeds, the Small Catechism, and the Augsburg Confession printed in the front. It is the best contemporary English translation of the traditional Norwegian liturgy available. Order a copy today and see for yourself.

Catechism Resources

Road Trip

For confirmation instruction take a look at "Road Trip" by Hans Wiersma.  It's available from Seraphim Communications at:  http://www.seracomm.com/roadtrip.

Reviews:

"Road Trip" uses excellent, creative video to supplement solid, confessional teaching guides. One year focuses on the catechism, and the other year focuses on the bible. Hans was my pastoral partner when we lived in California. He is now completing his PhD at Luther. He's a gifted teacher and writer.

Here's the description from page 91 of the 2002-2004 Concordia catalog:

According to Plan: Suitable as a first-year confirmation program or Bible overview, this resource for 7th and 8th graders highlights the big picture of God's plan for salvation. This curriculum simplifies lesson preparation, allows maximum flexibility, and encourages family involvement. 32 lessons.

Growing as God's People: Helps confirmation students see God's truths and apply them to daily living. The Word and Sacraments receive clear treatment and the format allows instructors to put emphasis on particular areas of the catechism. Colorful graphics and illustrations throughout. 40 teaching chapters divided into six units.

Reviews:

For the catechism year I use "Growing As God's People" and for the Bible history year I use "According to Plan." Both are simple and have lots of illustrations and diagrams. Of course the primary text is the Bible and Small Catechism.

The teacher resource for the catechism is a 16 page booklet and doesn't provide much specific advice about how to teach the material. The workbooks are optional, but provide additional activities related to each lesson. I would suggest that you order a sample of the materials and look them over before ordering in quantity.

Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation

For a small catechism with supporting Bible verses, and additional questions and answers, i.e. "How is this done?", look at "Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation", published by Concordia Publishing House (LC-MS). Phone:1-800-325-3040.

It is a small, sturdy, hard cover book, and ready to use with slight additions in regards to:

  1. having the communion table open to all who believe in Jesus as Lord and Saviour, are baptized, and know we believe in the real presence of the body and blood of Christ in, with and under the bread and wine.

  2. the additional Bible verses from both Old and New Testaments showing women in public ministry.

Reviews:

It is my personal opinion that we need to equip our confirmands with full knowledge of how our Lutheran doctrine is solidly based on Scripture. All should know where to find the key verses of the Bible which Luther used for the Catechism, and to have them memorize (hide in their heart) as many as possible.

This would also be a good tool to use for adult Bible studies, for the many people who have had minimal instruction.

"Luther's Small Catechism with Explanation", Concordia Publishing Co., is the best presentation of those we have examined.
