DISTRICT NEWS We are pleased to share good news about our mission churches. The response to our Christmas letter and the last issue of The Crux of the Matter has been great. Individuals and churches have sent Lenten offerings to help these mission churches faithfully witness to the message of justification by faith alone for the redemption of God’s people today. We are very near our goal with Peace Lutheran, and we are making good progress with the others. We are grateful that God has used this season of reflection and preparation for Easter to further the proclamation of his gospel through our mission starts. Peace Lutheran Church in Orange Beach, AL, has outgrown its space! The sanctuary has been filled to capacity every Sunday this winter, and the overflow has had to stand in the kitchen. Another Baptist church in Orange Beach has built a new church and their older, smaller church is sitting empty. The folks at Peace hope to be able to make arrangements to use the "older" Orange Beach Baptist Church next fall. The Fellowship Committee sponsored a President’s Day dinner on February 17th that was a smash hit. "Honey Baked ham, extraordinarily good baked beans, knock out cole slaw (a special recipe), the best potato salad, and a choice of 2 desserts." It was a sell out event, and the highlight of the winter for some of the snowbirds! The pastors showed their lighter side, and "James Cagney" and "Jimmy Duranti" (lip sink) even showed up! Good old fashioned Christian fun and fellowship abounded. Peace will gladly receive LBWs that you’re ready to replace, and we are proud to say that we are within $2,000 of reaching our funding objective if all the pledges are received. Fellowship Lutheran Church in Louisville, KY, has grown from six to twenty-five members. Pastor Sanders has baptized two new members, and continues to reach out to people in the downtown Louisville area. Fellowship worships once a month at the Holiday Inn, and on Wednesday evenings at the Messiah Lutheran Church. They have a weekly Bible study in member homes, and continue to look for their own "permanent" place to worship on Sunday mornings. Gifts for Fellowship Lutheran may be sent directly to:
Sola Scriptura Lutheran Church (SSLC) in Flint, MI, worships at New Life Christian Fellowship on Saturday nights. They have a Bible study on Wednesday evenings in member homes, and an hour of Bible study on Saturday before they worship. Once a month they have a dinner and a shorter Bible study on Wednesday night. Five faithful supply preachers from SE Michigan continue to preach and teach for them. SSLC has about a dozen families, and they are looking to call a pastor this year. Several members are trained in "Evangelism Explosion" and they are training other members, too. Gifts for Sola Scriptura may be sent directly to:
Two more new churches are getting started, Living Stones in SE Michigan, and Abiding Presence in Nashville, TN. More on these starts next month. The third Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) convention is being held April 28-29, 2002, at North Heights Lutheran Church in Roseville, MN. LCMC’s first convention in Phoenix, AZ, March 25-27, 2001, was a "dual convention" with the WordAlone Network (WAN). The business of LCMC and WAN was intertwined in joint plenary sessions. The second LCMC convention was held in October 2001 at Westwood Lutheran in St. Louis Park, MN. This convention dealt entirely with LCMC business. The LCMC constitution was officially adopted, ministry standards were adopted, and the organizational principles were adopted as a continuing resolution. The upcoming convention shall be a bit different. LCMC will begin its convention on Sunday afternoon, have a joint session with WAN on Monday morning, and conclude with its own plenary session. The proposal to adopt the ALD Article on the Nature of the Church will be voted on at this convention, and the matter of who "owns" the LCMC Seminary Debt Relief fund will be settled. According to the audited financial reports of WAN and LCMC, the Youth Fund is in the name of WAN, while the mission and seminary debt relief funds are held in the name of LCMC. While the first two conventions dealt with necessary business matters related to starting a new church body, we are hoping that this convention will be able to focus more on our fellowship within the association. There will be time for congregations to network, hear from some inspirational speakers, and learn more about the mission starts and the districts that are forming within LCMC. Registration forms and more information about the convention can be found at: www.lcmc.net Assemble
